Today, the Gender and Identity Factors Platform (GIFP) features “Engendering Extremism: Women Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism in Pakistan.”

This paper explores how non-govermental organisations (NGO) within Pakistan have used the broad framework of the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Agenda to support women to undertake critical roles and responsibilities in counter terrorism and countering/preventing violent extremism (CT/PCVE). Drawing on the work of the Pakistan Initiative for Mothers and Newborns, a women’s-led NGO, the paper recounts how women within civil society developed and implemented campaigns in the absence of a government-sponsored WPS National Action Plan, including through the provision of ongoing mentorship and guidance, livelihoods training, and interfaith dialogue. Collectively, these efforts demonstrated the political agency of women as change makers in CT/PCVE efforts.
