Preventing Violent Extremism in Nigeria: Effective Narratives and Messaging

This report provides a summary of a national-level workshop in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, “Preventing Violent Extremism: Leaders Telling a Different Story,” underneath the Leader Telling a Different Story project by the Club de Madrid in partnership with the Partnership against Violent Extremism . Organised in collaboration with Nigeria’s Office of the National Security Adviser, the workshop sought to bridge the gap between national policies and local realities, while promoting multi-stakeholder dialogue with government, civil society organisations (CSO), and community groups to understand P/CVE best practices, and foster government accountability. Workshop participants addressed issues of effective messaging, online radicalisation, and recruitment in an effort to reframe the narrative through the development of evidence-based recommendations on constructive communication strategies and messaging. The report outlines the key role that young people and women have in PVE, in addition to promoting community engagement, education, cultural activities and dialogue between citizens.
