Through four chapters and the analysis of various case studies, this research demonstrates how unequal gender power structures and dynamics fuel and shape violent extremism around South and South-East Asia. Within violent extremist groups, structures of patriarchy and harmful performances of masculinity are embedded, often manipulating or building on existing gender stereotypes to incite women and men to commit violence. It further emphasizes the need for CVE interventions to work with local communities in order to respond to these dynamics, for example by empowering women and girls.
