Global Digital Consultations: Civil Society Voices on the Gendered Dimensions of Violent Extremism and Counter-Terrorism Responses

This is the outcome report of the global digital consultations “Voices and perspectives of civil society on the gendered dimensions of violent extremism and counterterrorism responses” organized by UN Women, on behalf of the Gender Working Group of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact, from 25 May to 5 July 2020, funded by the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Centre in the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism.

The consultation was open to civil society participants, including independent women’s/women-led civil society organizations (CSOs), CSOs with strong credentials as gender equality advocates, and independent women’s human rights and gender equality activists. More than 140 civil society representatives from 43 countries across the world participated in the consultation.

The report summarizes civil society participants’ views, challenges, and recommendations on the gendered dimensions of terrorism and violent extremism, and on the impact that current measures to prevent violent extremism and counter terrorism have on their work and rights.
